Vehicle-Grid Integration Council and Task 53 Announce Collaboration to Advance Interoperable Bidirectional Charging Technologies
November 14, 2024
Sacramento, CA, USA / Zürich, Switzerland — The Vehicle-Grid Integration Council (VGIC) and International Energy Agency (IEA) Task 53 – Interoperability of Bidirectional Charging (INBID) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster the development and deployment of interoperable bidirectional charging technologies. This partnership underscores both organizations’ commitment to enhancing Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems across North America and beyond.
VGIC, a national advocacy group focused on advancing vehicle-grid integration solutions, including managed charging and bidirectional charging technologies, will collaborate with Task 53 to facilitate interoperability between electric vehicles and charging infrastructure supported by ISO 15118-20.
The collaboration aims to identify gaps in the current standards and regulations affecting interoperable bidirectional charging. This feedback will be critical in shaping the future of V2G technology. Task 53 will lead testing activities at recognized laboratories, including Argonne National Laboratories, facilitating knowledge exchange on use cases and interoperability. Both organizations will work together to promote interoperable bidirectional charging technologies through industry events, publications, and outreach efforts. Regular work sessions will be held between VGIC and Task 53 to discuss progress, share research, and explore opportunities for additional outreach.
Zach Woogen, VGIC’s Interim Executive Director, stated, “This collaboration represents a significant step toward achieving seamless integration of electric vehicles into our electric grid, ultimately leading to a more affordable, reliable, and efficient energy system.”
Bjoern Christensen from Task 53 added, “We are excited to work with VGIC to tackle interoperability challenges and drive innovation in bidirectional charging technologies.”
